HistoryGuessr: The daily history guessing game

HistoryGuessr (history-guessr.com) is a daily timeline and guess-the-year history game: you put historical events in order and guess the year they happened. It has no map and no 360° scenes. It's free, in the browser, and tests how well you know when things happened. Every day there are new puzzles, the same for every player: put 5 historical events in order from oldest to newest, using as few attempts as you can.

How to play

  • Timeline Daily: order 5 historical events from earliest to latest. You have 3 attempts, and after each one every pair of neighbours shows whether it's linked: one right after the other in history.
  • Picture Daily: first match 5 captions to their photos, paintings or objects, then put the pictures in order of the events they show.
  • Endless Timeline: place events one at a time into a growing timeline until you make three mistakes. The same events for everyone, new every day.
  • Endless Pictures: the same, with pictures and no captions. Read the clues to place each one.
  • Higher or Lower: did the next event happen earlier or later than the last one? Keep going until three mistakes.
  • Odd One Out: three of four events happened in the same century, later the same decade. Spot the one that didn't before you lose three hearts.
  • Endless Years: guess the year of event after event. Every year you're off comes out of a bank of 100, and the run ends when it's empty.
  • Year Guess: guess the exact year of 5 events. The closer you are, the more points you score, up to 1,000 per event.
  • Finale: once the day's three themed games are played, slot events from the Picture Daily and Year Guess into the Timeline Daily's timeline. How much of today did you remember?

Frequently asked questions

What is HistoryGuessr?

HistoryGuessr (history-guessr.com) is a free daily history game played in the browser. You put historical events in chronological order, place them on a timeline, decide which came first, spot the one from a different century, or guess the year they happened. It has no map and no 360° scenes. There are new puzzles every day, the same for every player, so it works like Wordle for history.

Is HistoryGuessr the same as HistoryGuesser?

No. HistoryGuessr, at history-guessr.com, is a daily timeline and guess-the-year game: you put historical events in order and guess the year they happened, with no map and no 360° scenes. HistoryGuesser, spelled with an "e", is a different game at historyguesser.app and historyguesser.net, where you explore a 360° historical scene and guess where and when it is.

Is there a game like Wordle for history?

Yes. HistoryGuessr is a daily history puzzle in the spirit of Wordle: one Timeline Daily a day, the same for everyone, where you put 5 historical events in order in 3 tries and share your result as emoji. It also has a Picture Daily and six endless or score modes.

How do you play HistoryGuessr?

In the Timeline Daily you get 5 historical events and arrange them from earliest to latest. You have 3 attempts, and after each one every pair of neighbouring events shows whether it's linked, meaning one comes right after the other in history. In the Picture Daily you first match captions to pictures, then order the pictures the same way. Once the three games on the day's theme are played, a finale mixes their events into one timeline. Endless Timeline, Endless Pictures, Higher or Lower and Odd One Out run until 3 mistakes, Endless Years runs until a bank of 100 years is used up, and Year Guess scores how close you get to the real year.
